Course description

Woodworking with hand tools is enormously good fun with sharp tools but frustrating and difficult with dull ones. Even when brand new we rarely find that a tool is ready and sharp enough to use out of the box. We examine how to tell when you need to sharpen and how to commission a new hand plane or chisel. We cover flattening backs, primary and secondary bevels, selecting sharpening media (diamond stones, water stones, etc), understanding sharpening angles and selecting tool steels. We also introduce you to some of the popular mechanized solutions to otherwise tedious grinding tasks. If you browse a woodworking tool catalog you will find a dizzying array of sharpening stones, guides, jigs and, frankly, gimmicks, that promise to up your sharpening game. This course will demystify all of that and concentrate on the few things that really matter - regardless of which sharpening system you have or opt for. With the basic theory out of the way we will get you sharpening. If you've been struggling with tools that don't seem to work as well as they used to you will find the act of using a sharp one a meditative experience. You are strongly encouraged to bring some of your own tools to the class where you will have an opportunity to sharpen them with your newfound knowledge. This course is aimed at all skill levels. No previous experience required.
