Course description
Make your own house number, shop sign or haiku. Our letter and sign carving class is the perfect introduction to making your own wooden signs with traditional carving techniques. You won't be using routers or any other machinery here - this course teaches you old-school carving with chisels, gouges and knives. We will show you how to layout a sign in any typeface of your choosing and teach you the methods we use to to carve beautiful flowing letters. This course will also introduce you to various embellishment and finishing options for your signage - including the application of gold leaf and some methods of carved surface decoration for your background. This course is for anyone new to traditional sign carving - no previous experience is required. All tools and materials will be provided. We encourage you to bring a favored typeface to the class which you will use to make your first sign (full details will be provided after enrollment). This course is led by master violin maker and carving expert, Andrew Carruthers.
