Course description

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of woodworking with an emphasis on furniture making with hand tools. Students will learn traditional hand-cut joinery techniques as well as how to select, sharpen and use an assortment of hand tools including saws, chisels, planes, spoke shaves and marking/layout tools. You will learn how to glue and clamp your work and prepare surfaces for applying a finish. We will also cover basic woodworking theory such as selecting wood and understanding wood movement. Lectures, demonstrations and bench practice combine to familiarize students with wood’s attributes as a medium for both artistic expression and furniture construction. Each student will make a small bench that you will take home . This is an excellent course for those who would like to learn woodworking with just a few basic tools. This course is aimed at beginners or existing machine woodworkers who want to learn traditional hand tool techniques. It may especially appeal to those who prefer to eschew noisy and dangerous machinery in pursuit of a more peaceful practice of the craft The ideal companion course to this one is our Introduction to machine woodworking. You can take the courses in any order.
