Course description
The dovetailed joint is among the most admired in woodworking for its exceptional strength and enduring beauty. Executing a nicely fitted dovetail joint can seem intimidating but we will show you that with careful stock preparation and layout, some essential sawing and chisel techniques and a bit of practice you will be able to hand-cut 'through' dovetails and incorporate them into your work. You will learn how to space and layout the pins and tails, use squares and marking knives, saw accurately to a line, chisel square to a knife line, check and ease the fit before assembly and clamp and glue up the joint. Dovetails are often used as corner joints in things like cabinets, tool chests, drawers and trays. In this course you will make a small hard wood box to take home with dovetailed corners. This course will also demonstrate how to hand-cut the "half blind" dovetail joint which is visible as a dovetail from the side but not the front and is common in drawer making. This course is aimed at those with at least some experience of hand tool woodworking. Everything you need will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own hand tools to the class.
