Course description

Marquetry is an ancient technique in which different natural colors of wood veneers are carefully cut to fit precisely together in a design. In the mid-sixteenth century, Italian craftsmen started using marquetry as furniture decoration, beginning a long history that still thrives today. Marquetry images are also often just framed and enjoyed as intricate works of art. During the process of completing a project, students will learn the double-bevel method of marquetry. This highly accurate technique eliminates gaps around individual pieces of the picture by cutting the insert and background at the same time with a special angled cut that we will teach you. We will show you how to set up and use a powered scroll saw to accomplish this but it can also be done with more rudimentary tools like a hand held fret saw and a simple platform. You will also learn how to accomplish shading with hot sand. Students attempting marquetry for the first time are often surprised how easy it is to get wonderful and realistic looking results – you really can paint with wood! We’ll show you how to accomplish simple things like leaves and branches and then you’ll move on to complete a small marquetry design of your choosing. This course is aimed at all skill levels. No previous experience required. The ideal companion course to this one is our Advanced Marquetry course.
