Course description
We start by showing you how to take rough boards and turn them into dimensioned lumber. In doing so you will learn how to use a jointer to mill a flat face and perpendicular edge, a planer to fashion the board to thickness and various powered saws (table saw, chop saw, hand-held circular saw) to achieve the needed lengths and widths. You will also learn the safe and proper use of the bandsaw, various sanding machines, hollow chisel mortiser, router table and hand held router. This course includes learning about the set up and maintenance of your machinery. We will tailor the exact focus according to the skills and interests of the participants (a short survey will be provided to you before the course commences). Some things can be easily and safely learned from books or on-line instruction. We believe that machine woodworking is not one of them. This course will teach you to use the major woodworking machines safely and with confidence. This course is aimed at beginners but may be useful for anyone wanting to know more about how the major woodworking machines should be safely operated, set up and maintained. This course is not designed to teach you tricks for using woodworking machines in unconventional ways. The priority for this course is for you to have the confidence to purchase or use your own woodworking machines in the knowledge you are doing it right. The ideal companion course to this one is our Introduction to hand tool woodworking - 5 days. You can take the courses in any order.
