Course description
The mortise and tenon joint has been an essential woodworking component for several thousand years. There are many ways to cut a mortise and tenon - either by hand, machine or both - but this hands-on class uses it as a perfect introduction to hand cut joinery. By focusing on this one joint you will learn some of the essential skills needed for fine woodworking. Like all joinery, a perfectly fit mortise and tenon starts with accurate stock preparation, layout and marking. You will lay out the joint with squares, marking knives and various gauges (marking, cutting and mortise). We then show you how to use hand saws, chisels and planes to cut and fit the joint. Once you have accomplished the mortise and tenon you will see that the layout and cutting skills you have learned are applicable to a whole host of other woodworking joints and tasks and be well prepared for various furniture or carpentry projects. As well as covering the basic mortise and tenon we will show you several variations that you can use to strengthen or spice up your joinery (decorative "through" tenons, wedged tenons and draw-bored tenons). This course is aimed at anyone new to hand-tool woodworking. No previous experience is required but experienced machine woodworkers will find it particularly helpful. All the tools and materials needed for this course will be provided.
