Course description
The Advanced Marquetry class will expand on the lessons from our Beginners Marquetry classes. Class will run from 10am to 6pm each day. Students taking this class must have taken (or be signed up for) one of our beginners marquetry classes from David J Marks, Greg Zall or Matthew Werner - or have prior experience of the double bevel marquetry method. David will cover how to create realistic images in fine detail using the Window technique in several ways. You can bring in any images that you want to create and we will discuss how to determine the "Cut Lines" and create working designs. We will discuss how to make marquetry panels that are too big for your scroll saw by joining separate panels together and using inlay methods to connect the design elements. David will demonstrate how he does inlay and we will have Foredom rotary power tools with custom bases there for students to use. There will be a discussion of different glues and when and how to use them, fine-line work and sand-shading while avoiding shrinkage. The bandsaw is the best way to cut your own veneers from any woods in your collection, including dyed stabilized woods, vegetable ivory as well as small scraps that you have saved and David will demonstrate how to set up and cut them safely. The type of blades used will also be discussed. David will also bring his fine tipped wood burning tool for students who want to add wood burning for greater details. Materials other than wood are an excellent way to create images that will attract the viewer's attention due to it being unknown, unfamiliar and something surprising which causes us to see things in a new way. We will have non-ferrous metals such as copper and brass to cut. Mother of pearl shell as well as Abalone shell will be used in addition to various nuts: Tagua is a great ivory substitute and Betel Nuts have a distinct pattern that will add great detail. You can bring in any project that you are working on for advice and help so please take the time to make a list of your questions in advance. Note: Shell dust is damaging to the lungs so we will be vacuuming around our scroll saws periodically and you will need to wear a charcoal respirator when cutting. Each student will be required to bring their own respirator - (we will send you a suggested model you can buy once you have signed up for the class that costs about $35.) All other woods and materials will be provided and are included in the course fee.
